2019 Spring ORC Week 2: Updated Antique Stereo Cabinet

I might have a small problem…I LOVE shopping for old, gross, abused furniture on Facebook Marketplace. I love it because I just feel like there are so many great pieces that deserve a second chance at life. And the best part is you can usually score them at great prices, or even free!

I picked up this beautifully gross old antique stereo cabinet for around $15. Not gonna lie, it was a beast to get into the truck because it was SOO HEAVY, but it was worth it! I knew when I saw it I wanted to use it in our bedroom as a sort of console table.

The first thing I had to do to make my vision a reality was to take this monstrosity apart. You know the saying “they don’t make them like they used to?” Well, it’s true. This thing was not easy to take apart. I’ll spare you most of the details, but let’s just say it required a hammer, drill, and a sawzall.

Once it was fully taken apart, I taped off the hardware (because there was no way to take the hardware off without ruining something). With the hardware taped off, I just started painting.

The color of paint I used for this project is called Fall Blue and it is part of a Rustoleum Furniture Transformation Kit. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I LOVE this paint kit. Everything you need to transform a piece of furniture is included, and the paint that comes in the kit doesn’t require any major prep aside from simply cleaning the piece of furniture. The paint goes on smooth without streaks and dries fairly quickly leaving a gorgeous, vibrant color.

Once the body of the stereo cabinet was painted, I sanded the top of the cabinet so I could restain it to match other decor in the room, and really to help bring this piece back to life.

To stain the wood, I used my all-time favorite stain called Weathered from Old Barn Milk Paint. I use this stain on everything in my house and I absolutely love. It produces a gorgeous color on all kinds of wood and the best part about this stain is that it’s fairly quick drying and it doesn’t smell! So you can use it indoors without having to worry about that lovely chemical smell from most stains.

Once it was all stained and reassembled, I cut a couple of pieces of a decorative aluminum sheet to put in where the speakers had once lived. I did this because in the future, I may decide to get speakers for our TV that can actually be placed back in these compartments without requiring anything having to be taken apart.

I am so happy with how this turned out and it looks beautiful in our room so far. Can’t wait to see how it looks with the room completely finished!
