2021 Fall One Room Challenge – Week 7

This post contains sponsored product by Mohawk Home. All opinions are my own.

I can’t believe there’s only one week left of the One Room Challenge. I started out insanely behind because I just couldn’t find the things I had planned on using! But, I channeled the great Tim Gunn and told myself to find whatever I could and “Make it work.” And that I did…

I left off a couple of weeks ago showing you where I had landed after week 4. In case you don’t remember, here’s a quick reminder.

Pretty “blah” for halfway through the challenge, but I assure you, I’ve kicked it into high gear and have made some pretty considerable headway on this project.

Right after this picture was taken, I decided to tackle the wallpaper. I only wanted to wallpaper one wall – the main wall you see when you walk up the stairs and get a view of my daughter’s bedroom from the loft. I wanted something bold, but it also had to be something that I could run into the store to grab because the wait times for my wallpaper manufacturer weren’t going to align with my needs. And shameless plug here – if you didn’t know, I usually design my own peel & stick wallpaper and have it manufactured for my specific projects! Anyway, back to the store-bought wallpaper. There are actually TONS of great options out there, but if you’re going to need a lot, like more than 2-3 rolls, be prepared to have to hit up several stores to actually get what you need (lesson learned the hard way). Regardless, I got the wallpaper I needed and got it up fairly quickly – I think it only took somewhere between 30-45 minutes for the one wall, so not too bad at all! As soon as I stood back from the finished wall and took it in, I was so thrilled with how it looked – it was EXACTLY what I (and my daughter) had wanted.

From this point through the next week or two, things were kind of a whirlwind…

I had purchased some lights from Ikea to put up on either side of the bed because obviously we can’t have lamps just sitting on the floor. We all liked the lights, but, they just didn’t work. So, off to find new lights. Of course, we couldn’t find anything. So, we shifted our focus to the curtains! We had already bought and put up one pair of curtains from Ikea, but after putting them up we realized that we needed more. I’m a wall-to-wall curtains kind of girl. I LOVE texture in a room, so having an entire wall lined with curtains makes my heart so happy. It also reminds me a bit of being in a hotel, which who doesn’t love that?! So off we went to Ikea for THE LAST PAIR of curtains they had in stock. Ya’ll, this supply chain disruption has been stressful! I can’t even imagine what it’s been like for all of the folks working at the stores and logistics companies that are responsible for moving all of the items around the world.

With wallpaper and curtains complete, I had my sights set on adding a new ceiling light to the room. Apparently, when we had our house built, we didn’t think to ask “do ceiling lights come standard in the bedrooms?” because I mean, why wouldn’t they?!?! But clearly, they did not come standard, so I had to hire an electrician to come out and add a light for us. Not just any light though…. I let Maddie pick the light she wanted and honestly, she wasn’t too picky, but her only DEMAND was “SPARKLY!!!!” So here came a very intriguing design challenge….how do you have a sparkly light when you also need a fan? Turns out, there’s a unique lighting category called “fandeliers” that combines pretty sparkly lights with fans! And when I saw this one, with a bit of skepticism, I knew I had to have it.

Now, let’s be clear, I was VERY nervous about whether I would actually like the fandelier once it was installed because this category of lighting isn’t brand new, but the older versions were just….not cute. I was hopeful though that because this has acrylic blades that retract when not in use that it would work out well, and it absolutely did! This video doesn’t do it justice, but it does give you a glimpse of just how discrete the fan blades are!

One design element I was not really anticipating was my daughter’s choice for a chair. We randomly stopped at a HomeGoods in another town and there it was….the egg chair.

It’s huge, it’s bulky, and I was REALLY nervous about it, but she loved it, so we bought it. Because I wasn’t planning on making a very LARGE purchase, I didn’t bring the truck, so a very nice man that works at the store had to help me disassemble this thing, and we played several challenging rounds of Tetris to get this thing to fit in my SUV with myself, my daughter, and the other purchases we had made that day.

The part of the room I’ve been most excited to work on was the floor and our brand new Mohawk rug! I was so surprised when Mohawk contacted me to let me know that they picked us to receive a rug of our choosing for the One Room Challenge, and also so excited because I wanted Maddie to pick out her own rug.

This little lady has such a great eye for design, so I had no doubts that when she picked out her rug that it would be perfect. Out of the TONS of rugs that we had the opportunity to choose from, Maddie picked out the Mohawk Home Prismatic 8 x 10 Blue Floral/Botanical Bohemian/Eclectic Area Rug.

This rug features a bold design, and let me tell you why that is PERFECT for the room of a little one – it hides messes in a beautiful way! See, my daughter loves to craft, which means paint, glitter, paper scraps, beads, you name it! We needed something durable, tough, and jaw-droppingly beautiful to really make her room a gorgeous sanctuary that would be able to grow with her for years to come, and this rug fit the bill perfectly!

There’s one week left and still LOTS to do, so stay tuned for the final reveal!!!
