4 Things That Make for a More Secure Home

We all want a nice home to live in, but probably the most important thing for your home is that it is as secure as possible. That is essential if the home is to be enjoyable to live in and to ensure you feel safe. However, it’s one thing to want that, and another to know how to actually make it happen. The truth is that there are a few key things you might want to focus on if you are to have a more secure home, and in this article we will take a look at some of the most important of these.

Secure Windows

The windows are one of the most central things when it comes to keeping a secure home. You want to be sure that your windows have locks on them and are made of durable glass that can withstand strong winds and potential debris hitting them every now and then in the event of a storm, especially if you have a lot of trees in your yard. If there is a problem with your windows and they are going to need fixing, then make sure to do that as soon as possible, before anything bad happens. With the right kolbe windows in the first place, that should be something that rarely or never needs to happen anyway.

Locked Doors

There used to be a time when most people didn’t lock their doors – at night or while away from the home. Unfortunately, those days are pretty much long gone for most of us, so it’s best practice to keep all of your doors locked at night, and it is really important that you really remember all of the doors you have into your home. The amount of times people think they have locked up for the night, when really their garage door could only be opened by anyone. If you know that you have made this mistake in the past, then you might need to think about what you can do in order to ensure that you remember in the future. As long as you keep all  the doors locked, you are not actively inviting anyone into your home, and you will feel much more secure. Make it a habit to check all the doors before you head to bed, or even better, install smart locks that allow you to monitor the status of your locks at any time, from anywhere, through a mobile app.

Roof Repairs

Sometimes you need to have the roof repaired, and when that is the case you should absolutely make sure that you are going to have that done as soon as possible. We generally forget about the roof, but the truth is that managing to keep it in good repair is going to be of central importance when it comes to ensuring that the home is safe in general. So be sure to think about this, and have it repaired the moment you discover that something is wrong with it. Also, if you’re not already familiar with your home insurance policy, take a few minutes to look over what may or may not be covered in terms of a roof. When my husband and I were selling our previous home, the home inspector said we needed a new roof. Because we live in the midwest where there are lots of pretty bad storms, we made quick call to our insurance company who sent someone out to take a look. They concluded that there had been damage to our roof from some fairly recent storms (within the last 2 years), so they issued a check for us to have the roof replaced. Considering how expensive new roofs can be, this was a welcomed benefit to us as it saved us several thousands of dollars.

The Fence

Finally, remember that the yard is itself a kind of perimeter, and that you need to protect that perimeter at all costs in order to ensure that nobody gets into your home. Most people could probably scale a fence, of course, but you need to make sure that you are at least making it as hard as possible by keeping it in good repair and making sure it is fairly high. That is going to at least deter the worst of the criminals wanting to enter your home without your permission.
