A New Home is Exciting, Be Prepared!

You have just moved into your new home and you are looking forward to settling in and shaping your new space. You have to unpack, meet your new neighbors and get acquainted with the area. You will want to create a happy and organized home. But before all that – and before you relax for the first time on your couch – there are some things you need to know! Especially if you want to save money!

Things to keep on top of when moving in!

The key you used to open the front door may not belong to you alone and therefore it’s important to look at getting new locks just to be on the safe side. Think about who else can have it. Former tenants, old mates or babysitters and this can pose a threat. When you first enter a new home you should always change the locks, as you may not know who else had the key before you. Also make sure that all the locks on windows, garage doors, etc. work. If not, replace them or repair them immediately. You can look at people who can assist you with these types of things including installing an alarm, you may want to look at Local Offers.

Where are the important switches and valves? Imagine a pipe breaks and water spills on your floor. Of course you have to close the valve, but if you do not know where it is, you can imagine the magnitude of the disaster, especially if you can’t afford to hire a plumber right away. When you move in, it is important to find all the important switches and valves that you may need to use in an emergency.

How safe are your electric sockets? Although you will have already had a surveyor look at your building, you do also want to be double sure that there are no problems. The last thing you need when moving into a new home is to find out if a socket overheats and catches fire while you are preparing to decorate your living room. Make sure the electrical wiring of the house is safe and will not cause you any problems.

Are the filters in your appliances new? The various filters in the house (air conditioning systems, heating system etc.) are a source of dust, dirt and various contaminants. So put this on your list of priorities to replace them with the one you moved to your new home and to ensure your home is a healthy place, and there is no mold in the damper areas of the rooms, such as windowsills. If you have kids, you will want to get this sorted beforehand.

Get a smoke alarm! Many fires produce odorless gasses that are very toxic and without a smoke alarm, you may never know if there is a fire in the house. People who are asleep can be overcome by these toxic gasses and may never wake up.  Smoke alarms provide life-saving warnings to allow you and your family to get out of the house before you are trapped by fire or smoke. Moving house is exciting but don’t overlook the little things.
