Allergy Friendly Trick-or-Treating and the Teal Pumpkin Project

The look and feel of trick-or-treating has changed a bit over the last several years. Things like trunk-or-treat, teal pumpkins, and downtown trick-or-treating at local businesses have begun to be staples for the holiday. They all have really provided a safer way for kids to trick-or-treat, but my favorite of them all is probably the teal pumpkins. The Teal Pumpkin Project encourages families to utilize teal pumpkins to signify which homes or business are allergy friendly trick-or-treating locations for kids who may have food allergies.

What exactly is the Teal Pumpkin Project?

The Teal Pumpkin Project is a movement that was created to ensure all children are able to trick-or-treat without fear of consuming a treat that may cause an allergic reaction. Families and businesses are encouraged to place teal pumpkins or teal pumpkin signs outside of their home or business as a way to signify they are passing out prizes that are safe for all kids.

What can I pass out instead of candy for trick-or-treaters?

It’s simple! Any non-food item that is kid-friendly will do! Here’s a list of items that kids will be sure to love!

Glow Sticks
Temporary Tattoos
Bracelets and Necklaces
Crayons
Bubbles
Pencil Toppers
Mini Slinkies
Noise Makers
Bouncy Balls
Novelty Toys

If you still want to pass out candy too – that’s totally ok! Just be sure that you keep one bucket for candy, and one for non-food prizes.

Luckily it’s so easy to find a teal pumpkin right now! Most major retailers and craft stores, like Target and Michael’s, have teal pumpkins right now, and if you can’t find one, you can always get some teal paint and decorate one yourself!
