Fall 2022 One Room Challenge

It’s that time of year again – time to update a room in my house during the One Room Challenge! This has become one of my favorite times of the year because it usually is the kick in the pants I need to get some things done! In full transparency though, there are times when I START the One Room Challenge and don’t finish it. In fact, two years ago I attempted to update the same room I’m working on this year and didn’t get far at all. You know, life happens! but this year I am fully committed (and actually started work AHEAD of schedule to set myself up for success). So, without further ado, the room I’ll be transforming for the Fall 2022 One Room Challenge is my….

MASTER BEDROOM

Here’s the thing…this is the biggest bedroom I’ve ever had. Our old house didn’t have a “master” bedroom per se, but just had two pretty equal size rooms on the main floor, neither of which had a bathroom attached. So when we moved into our new build house a few years ago, I was honestly a little intimidated by our bedroom. It’s too big to just have a bed and dresser in as the size of the room dwarfs the bed then, but it’s not quite big enough to have a full sitting area in addition to the bed and dressers. So over the past 4+ years, I’ve played around with layout, colors, furniture, etc… and still struggled to find the right fit.

Additionally, despite having 4 bedrooms upstairs AND a loft, the master bedroom still has become the primary “hangout” upstairs. Every night, the entire family (including cats) migrate into the master bedroom to read books, watch TV, and just generally hang out. While it’s nice to have a place that the family congregates in, it also means that all the STUFF that comes with each person ends up in here. It’s also the first room you hit when you come up the stairs, so laundry baskets, shopping bags, and whatever else ends up in here. As a result, you get the below….

And to really drive the point home, here’s a quick video of what the bedroom looked like before I got started on the room…

So what’s the plan?

The plan is simple, modern, refined, and moody. I want a place that I can truly relax in, that also works for the family, knowing it’ll always be the popular hangout upstairs. I want black and moody, with wood and gold accents. I want texture, contrast, and timeless. It also needs to be a healthy mix of glam and masculine. Not too much to ask, right?! 😛 Honestly, I don’t think it’s too much to ask and I’ve been so excited about putting together the mood board and sourcing my items, that there’s NO DOUBT in my mind that this room won’t be everything AND MORE! So, here’s what I’m thinking with a little photo inspo…

I can’t WAIT to show you my progress over the next 8 weeks! And I’m SO CURIOUS – what do YOU think of my design idea? Are you a fan of this aesthetic?
