Gardening Tips for the New Year

There is no getting away from the fact that gardening can help to reduce stress, as well as just be a fun hobby to have. Planning and designing your garden can be so enjoyable, and something that is fun to do as we start a brand new year soon. There are things that are good to plant at this time of year, ready for the spring and the summer, as well as things that you can do to help your garden to thrive over winter. So here are some gardening tips and advice for the start of a new year.

Composting

If you don’t already have a compost bin or a compost heap, then now is the time to start with one. You don’t need huge amounts of space in order to create one that will work well in your garden and do all that you need it to do. There will be different ways of doing it that will suit your garden and personal preference, but it will help to reduce waste, as well as create some natural nutrients for your garden.

Redesign

Having a garden that could need a little extra love means that you have the perfect excuse to change things up a little. By looking into landscape design you could change the layout of your garden, as well as add in some more fun elements like a patio, decking, pond, or water feature. You might not have a lot of space to play with, but looking at some of the things that you can do to change the layout, and think about what can be planted where, will make such a difference.

Wildlife-friendly

Having wildlife in your garden can be a good thing. Of course, you don’t want to attract things like pests, but attracting bees and birds to your garden can be a really positive thing. Birds help to eat slugs, snails, aphids, and other pests in the ground. This can be a good thing to help your garden to thrive. Bees are amazing pollinators, which can really help the whole environment around you. If you want to improve your garden, then encouraging them into your garden is something that can help to improve the overall health of it.

Things like wildflowers are great for bees, but look up online some particular flowers to plant in order to attract them. For birds, think about making the space comfortable for them. Bird baths, bird feeders, and other things can all be things that can help to attract them to your space outdoors.

Get planting

Winter is a great time to get planting. One thing that is perfect to plant is a tree. Planting bare root trees and shrubs can be such a good choice for right now, but of course, you can plant anything in containers at any point throughout the year. The variety of tree to plant? Well, that is entirely up to you. Think about what you want from the tree (fruit, shade, or appearance) and then you can go from there.
