Tips to Decorate for Fall without Breaking the Bank
If you’re anything like me, you probably love the fall and fall decor. I love the warmth of the oranges and reds that are typically seen this season, as well as the wood tones and metallics that are so popular right now! While decorating for fall is so much fun, it can also get really expensive if you’re not careful. That’s why I want to share with you my tips to decorate for fall without breaking the bank.
Buy decor that spans multiple seasons.
If you’re going to spend money on decor, make sure you get your money’s worth out of it! If I’m spending what I consider to be “a lot” on seasonal decor (my personal max is usually around $25 counts as “a lot”), then I want to make sure I can use it more than one time a year. Metallic pieces like a gold serving tray or fruit basket can typically cross seasons pretty easily between fall and winter/Christmas. They can also be great for New Year’s parties or even birthday or anniversary parties. So take your time and be thoughtful about the pieces of fall decor you buy and really envision what other seasons or events you could use that piece for if investing money into it.

Decorate with faux florals instead of real flowers.
Ok, so don’t get me wrong, I LOVE fresh flowers. As in, I buy them almost every time I go to the grocery store. However, they can be expensive. Especially if you’re going to put multiple, large arrangements in your home. A good way to create the same look for less is by using faux floral arrangements. There are great faux florals you can buy online, but they can sometimes be more pricey than the real thing, so you have to be careful and shop wisely. My favorite way of using faux florals is to buy the faux flowers at craft stores like Hobby Lobby, Joann’s, or Michael’s when they’re on sale or I have a coupon. I then will make my own floral arrangements either using containers I already have or by purchasing inexpensive ones from the dollar store or thrift shop. By doing this, you can create custom looks that are unique to your taste and your home.
Use multi-purpose vase fillers.
I never used to use vase fillers, but I have recently become pretty obsessed with them. Just like every other seasonal item, they can also be expensive if you need to purchase a lot. However, you can definitely get creative with your vase fillers and use multi-purpose items such as popcorn kernels, coffee beans, or candy. Let’s take candy for example. Seasonal candy already comes wrapped in pretty wrappers that match seasonal colors (think Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or Hershey’s Kisses). You can fill a clear vase or apothecary jar with these, then when the fall season is over and it’s time to switch to the next, you can use that candy for your holiday baking!
Look in your yard for free things you can use.
Fall is a great time to get natural, free home decor right from your yard. Pinecones, acorns, leaves, and twigs are all available and free for the taking. You can use these items as vase fillers, mantel decor, or to decorate plain candles. There are so many creative ways to use these items in your home decor, the opportunities are endless!
Use interchangeable small items.
Over the years, I have learned to furnish my home with fairly neutral decor, such as chairs, sofas, paint colors, and carpet/rugs so I can much more easily swap out my smaller items to match the decor style I’m aiming for. Throw pillows, bedding, picture frames, candles, wall decor, vases, etc…. These are all things that are smaller, and typically less expensive, that can be swapped out seasonally, or even more frequent. I find myself moving things from one room to another fairly frequently to keep my decor fresh without spending any money. Because these items are all smaller, they’re also easier to put in storage when not in use.
Swap items with friends.
This one doesn’t come up very often in the design world that I’m aware of, but it definitely should, especially when referencing seasonal decor. Exchange decor items with friends! This is a totally free way of introducing new seasonal decor into your home without spending a dime! You can even turn it into a fun girls day by having a ton of friends over, lay out all of the seasonal decor you’re willing to part with for the season, and exchange! I’ve heard of many groups of friends doing this with clothes and purses, so why not do it with home decor?
Shop inexpensively.
I’m not gonna lie, I have a love affair with places like Z Gallerie, Pier 1, Restoration Hardware, and Pottery Barn. The only problem is, money doesn’t go far in these places because everything is so expensive! Now, if you’re getting a quality piece that can be used over and over, then go for it. But for general seasonal decor, I prefer to shop at craft stores, thrift stores, and even dollar stores. My other tip for this is to shop after the season is over. Pottery Barn and Pier 1 are my favorite places to shop after the season is over to get the cute seasonal decor at a much more affordable price. Sure, you don’t get to use it in the current season, but you’ll be ahead of the game next year.
Ask the pros.
